Spatial and Temporal Heterogeneity of Host-Parasitoid Interactions in Lupine Habitat

چکیده

The inhabitants of the bush lupine in coastal California have been the subject of scientific scrutiny in recent years. Observations of a host-parasitoid interaction in the shrub's foliage, in which victims are significantly less motile than their exploiters, record stable spatial patterns in a fairly homogeneous environment. Though such pattern formation has been found in reaction-diffusion models, the correspondence of these models to continuous-time predator-prey interactions does not reflect the reality of the system being studied. Near the root of the lupine, another host-parasitoid interaction is also of considerable interest. In some cases this interaction, which promotes the health of the lupine, has been observed to be much more persistent than suggested by mathematical models. In this work a discrete-time spatial model of the first host-parasitoid system is introduced. We analyze the model, describing its transient behavior and finding the conditions under which spatial patterns occur, as well as an estimate of outbreak size under those conditions. We consider the feasibility of the necessary conditions in the natural system by modeling the mechanisms responsible for them, and discuss the effects of variable habitat on pattern formation. We also explore one possible explanation for the persistence of the second host-parasitoid system -- the existence of an alternate host. Under certain surprising conditions and by means quite different from previous models of similar situations, an alternate host can greatly enhance persistence of the nematode parasitoid.

Diversity, ecosystem function, and stability of parasitoid-host interactions across a tropical habitat gradient.

Global biodiversity decline has prompted great interest in the effects of habitat modification and diversity on the functioning and stability of ecosystem processes. However, the applicability of previous modeled or mesocosm community studies to real diverse communities in different habitats remains ambiguous. We exposed standardized nesting resources for naturally occurring communities of cavi...

Spatial and temporal genetic structure at the fourth trophic level in a fragmented landscape.

A fragmented habitat becomes increasingly fragmented for species at higher trophic levels, such as parasitoids. To persist, these species are expected to possess life-history traits, such as high dispersal, that facilitate their ability to use resources that become scarce in fragmented landscapes. If a specialized parasitoid disperses widely to take advantage of a sparse host, then the parasito...

Metapopulation extinction risk is increased by environmental stochasticity and assemblage complexity.

Extinction risk is a key area of investigation for contemporary ecologists and conservation biologists. Practical conservation efforts for vulnerable species can be considerably enhanced by thoroughly understanding the ecological processes that interact to determine species persistence or extinction. Theory has highlighted the importance of both extrinsic environmental factors and intrinsic dem...

Self-reinforcing spatial patterns enslave evolution in a host-parasitoid system.

Spatially structured models of host-parasitoid interactions exhibit self-structuring into spatial patterns such as spiral waves and turbulence. We discuss the consequences of these patterns in an eco-evolutionary model of host-parasitoid interactions with evolution of the parasitoids' ability to disperse towards dense populations of hosts (termed the aggregation strength). It turns out that the...

Habitat amount modulates the effect of patch isolation on host-parasitoid interactions

*Correspondence: Valérie Coudrain, Research Center Agroscope, Reckenholzstrasse 191, 8046 Zürich, Switzerland e-mail: [email protected] Habitat amount and patch isolation are important determinants of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. We studied the separate and interactive effects of these two components of habitat fragmentation on host-parasitoid interactions in a replicated landscape...
